7 Ways to Save Money in College

November 4, 2010 | posted by College Money Insider.

The following is a guest post by Polina of University Language Services.

It always feels like you’re strapped for cash in college. Between buying textbooks, sending tuition checks and budgeting for groceries, every penny counts!

Here’s some bittersweet news: you’re probably spending a lot of unnecessary money. Learn some cost-cutting secrets and you’ll be surprised at how much you can save.

Here are 7 things you can do to fatten your wallet:

  • 1. Buy Used Stuff.
Many treasures lay in wait in thrift stores. From jeans to wool mittens, you never know what you’ll find that suits you. The best part: it’s cheap! And if you go on a quest for vintage stuff, you may just earn some “cool” points while you’re at it.

  • 2. Treat Your Books Well.
Most college bookstores allow you to return your textbooks once you’re done with them, but they have to be in good shape. Though you won’t get all your money back, you’ll get a nice chunk. So no doodling!

  • 3. Use Your Meal Plan.
If you’re already laying out cash for your college meal plan, use it! Eating out at restaurants really adds up, and that’s especially wasteful if you could be eating for “free.”

  • 4. Brew Your Own Coffee.
Yes, I know. That triple shot latte with extra syrup tastes sooo good. But it costs an arm and a leg each time you buy it! If you need a caffeine fix, brew your own coffee at home.

  • 5. Recycle Your Cans.
Not only will you be doing something “green” (how trendy!), but you’ll be saving some money as well. Once that box of cans fills up, return them! Those few extra bucks will add up in the long run.

  • 6. Cancel Your Magazine Subscriptions.
Be honest with yourself. Do you really need that monthly subscription to People? Be eco and wallet-friendly and get rid of it! You can probably find it online anyway.

  • 7. Don’t Buy Brand Names.
In supermarkets and pharmacies in particular, you can find the same products for less in a generic brand. Often, they’re just as good as the brand-name product.

Saving money in college doesn’t have to mean cutting back on your favorite things. Just be creative when looking for corners to cut – you’ll be surprised at how many you’ll find!

It’s hard to save money while you’re in college! I know from my own experience..now my daughter is going to college and I tell her all the time that she doesn’t have to buy everything new. Like furniture or books. She can swap them on sites like BarterQuest (httP://www.barterquest.com). It saves her a lot of money and she can offer books she doesn’t need anymore. It’s easy.
