The College Board Releases Annual Trends in Higher Education Reports for 2010

In the 2009-2010 school year, the average financial aid package for full-time undergrads was $11,461, with grants making up the bulk of the aid, according to the Trends in Student Aid 2010 report released yesterday by The College Board.

Of the $11,461, $6,041 in grant aid was awarded, and $4,883 was from federal student loans. Of the grant money, Pell Grants made up 26% for undergraduate students.

At the same time that financial aid increased, college tuition prices increased, according to The College Board’s Trends in College Pricing 2010, which was also released on Thursday.

However, due to the increase in grant aid, the actual net tuition cost is down from previous years.

From an article published today on NASFAA:

“All this grant aid means there’s a really big difference between the published prices — and the net prices that students pay,” said report author Sandy Baum. “Published tuition and fees have risen, but net tuition and fees, on average, have declined.” But, Baum cautioned, “that doesn’t mean families aren’t struggling to pay.”

Other highlights from the reports:

  • $199.2 billion in financial aid was distributed to graduate and undergraduate students in the form of grants from all sources, Federal Work-Study (FWS), federal loans, and federal tax credits and deductions.
  • Students have borrowed an estimated $8.5 billion from state and private sources.
  • Between 2008-2009 and 2009-2010, Pell Grant funds to low- and moderate-income students increased by 58% ($10.3 billion in 2009 dollars) and veterans’ grant aid also saw an increase, by 131% ($5.4 billion).
  • Half of all full-time four year students attend colleges that charge less than $9,418 in tuition and fees, and half attend colleges that charge more than that.
  • Published prices do not reflect the costs that students pay.
  • Published in-state tuition and fees increased to $7,605 in 2011, up 7.9% from 2009-2010.
  • Published out-of-state tuition and fees increased to $19,595 in 2011, up 6.0% from 2009-2010.
