Raise in Tuition Increases Funds for Financial Aid at U of Dayton

The University of Dayton in Ohio is one of the most affordable schools in the country, and provides nearly 100% of financial aid to their students in need of assistance. The university strives to make schooling affordable and financial assistance attainable to every student. To maintain this precedent, a shift in the school’s finances was in order.

On March 2, 2011 UOD announced an increase in tuition, housing, and meal plans. According to Flyernews.com a 5.5% increase in tuition will be applied to all students for the 2011–2012 school year, and a smaller increase will be applied to the cost of meal plans and housing. As a result, the $7.4 million produced will be invested into financial aid and scholarships for students.

Providing financial assistance is the first priority, met before repairs and additional facility costs. According to Sundar Kumarasamy, vice president for Enrollment Management, “Many students are unaware that about half of the tuition and fees they pay to UOD goes directly toward various scholarships, grants and financial aid.”

According to the U.S. News & World Report in 2010, UOD was rated as one of the top 65 most affordable schools in the country and rated as one of the top universities with the highest financial assistance rates in the country. Despite the increase in students’ funds, it has not deterred students from applying to UOD. The application rate has been on the rise every year, making 2011 one of the highest enrollment rates to date.
