Reduction in Financial Aid for Qualified Students

Due to recent cuts to the state’s financial aid programs, some students in Washington who qualify for the State Need Grant (SNG) there are not going to receive it.

According to a report by the Daily Evergreen, due to recent changes in financial aid, an additional 3,000 Washington students who are eligible for the SNG won’t receive it. Last year, 22,000 students who were eligible for the grant did not receive it.

The rise in FAFSA filings along with a reduction in money available are responsible for the change. However, because the grant is first come first serve for eligible students, those students who apply for financial aid early are in a better position to receive the grant than others.

The article also states,

“This cut to higher education and financial aid is not unique. According to the HECB, the state has cut higher education operation budgets from nearly $3.7 billion to $3.2 billion since 2009.”

Washington is not the only state to experience bad news in regards to financial aid.  According to the Houston Chronicle, Texas is considering cuts to education programs, including the Texas Grants program. Currently, according to the article, the program currently “falls short of covering eligible students,” and is under consideration for being cut.
