Recently, the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia asked the General Assembly to provide an additional $30 million dollars in financial aid funding for students. This, according to an article published by BusinessWeek.com on November 3rd, has positioned Virginia as a proponent of higher education.

Both, the General Assembly’s budget writing committee as well as Governor Bob McDonnell have received a resolution from SCHEV requesting the additional funding be released by July of 2012. According to Lee Andes, assistant director for financial aid at SCHEV, the financial aid funding increased by 62 percent, however, the resulting awards of such declined by roughly 46 percent. One goal of the resolution is to return coverage of tuition costs to 1995 levels, which was around 13 percent.

In addition to this proposed resolution, The State Council of Higher Education in Virginia is also requesting funds to help in-state students who desire to attend nonprofit and/or independent colleges. The funding for such assistance is being requested for the Tuition Assistance Grant program in excess of $5.8 million dollars. The success of this proposal would allow prospective college students to receive close to $3,000 dollars in school funding on a yearly basis.
